Details concerning Mother E  . . .

This unique staff was recovered from a long neglected filbert orchard which had been bulldozed into large piles for burning to make way for new homes.  Given the lack of care and attention these trees had begun to return to their more natural shrub-like state, and the intricate shape you see at the top of this sculpture is actually part of a substantial rootball that I found in one of those piles

Once I removed the dirt and scruffy outer layers I could clearly see the struggle this particular limb had as it worked its way around other roots and obstructions to finally reach straight and tall towards the warmth and nourishment of the sun.  It struck me that our own Mother Earth also struggles against countless obstacles, obstructions and abuses (of which we are often one) to shine in the light of that same magnificent sun.

So to honor our earth mother I’ve cradled a wooden globe in the crook of this wonderfully organic form. I also wanted to honor all the creatures who swim in her waters, walk on her surfaces, and float on her breezes.  All life as we know it stands on the foundation that she provides . . . so we must be ever vigilant in keeping her healthy and thriving.
